Nokia's comeback into the smartphone world has been a fairytale story in the making. The bruised and batted stalwart - beaten into submission by the Samsungs and Apples of the world attempts to comeback and duke it out with the big boys. The story in incredible. But how well has HMD Global's new Nokia done exactly? Not bad as per IDC's latest report.
IDC's report on smartphone shipments in Q3 2017 states that HMD Global recorded a year on year growth exceeding 50 per cent. This compares remarkably favourably to other smartphone vendors in the market which on average recorded a negative year on year growth. Xiaomi is the only other smartphone vendor which recorded a year on year growth above 50 per cent.
Surprisingly, Nokia ranks 8th place in the top 10 smartphone manufacturers list, above LG and Lenovo. While the IDC report only states Nokia's year on year growth, the folks over at nokiamob.net did some calculations from a chart included in the report to figure out how many handsets HMD Global's Nokia actually sold.
With a 0.05 tolerance, they estimate that Nokia sold about 20.8 million phones (feature phones + smartphones) in Q3 2017. Thanks to data from IDC, we already know that Nokia sold 14.4 million phones in Q2 2017 (12 million feature phones and 1.4 million smartphones) and 12.1 million phones in Q1 2017 (12 million feature phones and 0.1 million smartphones).
Tallying them up, HMD Global and Microsoft together sold 35 million feature phones globally - 8.9 percent of the market. Out of the 21 million phones sold in Q3 2017, it is unknown at the moment how many were smartphones. Rumours claim that Nokia sold close to 3.4 million smartphones in Q3 2017.
