Few hours ago, a video showing a Zomato delivery person casually munching on a customer’s food order surfaced online. The video (embedded below) is 2 minutes and 37 seconds long and seems to be recorded via a smartphone. It shows a delivery person working with Zomato (as evinced by his Red-colored t-shirt), sitting on his parked two-wheeler and eating out of a customer’s food package. Once done, he repacks the order to put it back in the delivery bag, and then takes out another package to eat from it.
While it remains to be seen whether the video is legit or not, Zomato has issued its response via a blogpost on its official blog. In the post, the food-delivery platform said that while cases like this are unusual and rare, it takes such reports extremely seriously, and an internal investigation is currently underway.
The statement by Zomato reads, “We have found that the video was shot in Madurai; the person in the video is a delivery partner on our fleet. We have spoken to him at length – and while we understand that this was a human error in judgement, have taken him off the platform. This incident only makes our commitment to fleet training, scheduling and process even stronger. We stand behind our extensive fleet who do the right thing across many hours of the day.”
Zomato further mentioned that since it’s very much possible that in this case food was tampered with while on its way to the customer from the restaurant, the platform will soon be introducing tamper-proof tapes (for food packages) and other precautionary measures to safeguard against such incidents.
“In our commitment towards mitigating any possibility of tampering with food, Zomato will soon introduce tamper-proof tapes, and other precautionary measures to ensure we safeguard against any chances of tampering of food. Zomato has a zero tolerance policy for tampering of food,” the company said.
While it’s great see Zomato acting swiftly regarding on the incident, cases like these are certain to leave a sour taste in customers’ mouths.
